Senior Session: Annelise

Why yes, I have been randomly changing the look of this blog. I’m in a spring cleaning, “I’m tired of everything,” changey kind of mood lately so while it’s nowhere near perfect, the colors make me much happier. But honestly friends, the more I look into blog design and pixels and CSS and the interwebs……the more I just want to run away screaming to the nearest field of flowers and forget that such things as computers even exist!

Thankfully, computers do exist so that I can share these delightful portraits of a delightful young lady. I present to you….

Annelise

Class of 2012. All-Around Awesome Girl. Dr. Who fan. World Traveler. Missionary Kid. Future Nursing Student at Cedarville University.

Annelise is part of a small group I co-teach at my church. When I first met her, I kept forgetting her name and then worrying that I wasn’t pronouncing it right when I finally learned it. Thankfully, Annelise stuck around long enough for me to get it right and we’ve had fun times and gotten to know each other pretty well since then. Last year at camp, she was my suitemate in the dorm. I remember that Annelise wrote me a really sweet, encouraging note, and in turn I kept accidentally locking her out of the bathroom….

Still this girl has stuck with me through my blatant mistreatment of her, and now she’s graduating!!

Annelise chose my “Spicy Chai” senior session package (2 hour session, wardrobe and hair consultation, and choice of mini photobook or wallet prints) so we enjoyed a wonderful evening with a whole crew of girls picking out clothes, braiding hair, making props, and practically hiking all over Wake County wearing rainboots and TOMS.

Annelise’s friend Serena came along for the session and made this class of 2012 sign for her! I’m going to have to keep her around to make more props.

Annelise plays the viola, and we even talked her into playing for us a little bit.

Congratulations Annelise! I’m so thankful for you and how you serve the girls in our small group. I’m sad to see you go but so excited to watch how God directs your path.

Senior Portrait/Inspired Session: Kevin

This is my first senior portrait session of 2012! Introducing Kevin, one of the coolest people I know. My husband and I volunteer with the student ministry at our church, and through that we meet some exceptional young adults. I’ve known Kevin for a while, and when it came time to schedule his senior portraits I pitched a few outlandish ideas to him to make his session personal (and awesome), all of which centered on our ability to somehow magically remove his piano from his house and place it into the forest. After Kevin, my husband, and the laws of physics shot down my awesome piano idea…. I pitched another one…

I wanted to do a photo session inspired by the novel To Kill a Mockingbird, by Harper Lee.

Kevin was on board, I knew it was one of his favorites and we had several conversations about why it’s an incredible book. I zeroed in on the character of Atticus Finch, and decided to use him as inspiration for Kevin’s session. I’ve never seen the 1962 movie adaptation, so I looked at stills from the movie and grabbed some ideas for wardrobe from Mr. Gregory Peck himself. Hopefully sometime in the future I can write more about how I storyboarded this session and where I got the inspiration from. This was my first Inspired Session, so I kept it simple and used a few simple props, a couple wardrobe pieces, and pulled one dominant character trait from the pages of the novel to focus on.

This session was a lot of fun! We started with some more traditional shots for the first half of the session. Kevin is an accomplished pianist and has been teaching piano for a while, so we were delighted to find a small chapel where we could get some shots of him at the piano.

Next we went headed back to downtown Wake Forest.You probably can’t even graduate high school in this area without having your photo taken in front of a brick building in downtown Wake Forest. =) The bottom right is my favorite.

We began our Inspired session about halfway through after a quick wardrobe change. Downtown Wake Forest has so many interesting spots just waiting to be discovered. This location never caught my eye before, even though I have probably passed it a thousand times!

In the novel, Atticus Finch is usually reading a court case or a huge legal volume, and the love of knowledge is one of the sub-themes. PS those books were heavy!!

True story, the train hardly ever comes through here (which is why I decided this was safe place to shoot!) so the appearance of the train made this photo about 150% more awesome!

The Gregory Peck inspired glasses were actually prescription glasses owned by my assistant and Kevin’s friend Rebekah. (Hence the squinting)

The next two photos were taken by Rebekah. Great job!

As we ended the session, I asked Kevin for one word to describe Atticus Finch.

Courage.

Courage in the face of blind hatred and ignorance.

Courage with the awareness that his community, his family, and his children are watching his every move.

Courage with the awareness that he must act with integrity, even if no one is watching.

I love these last images, how he brings elements from the past and the present together.

Living a life of integrity demands courage, whether you are Atticus Finch trying to save an innocent man, or a brand new adult about to experience the world for the first time.

Congratulations Kevin! May you have that kind of courage as you follow God’s path for you.

Today, the man I married turns 30 years old. While I happily remain his 20-something trophy wife, I believe that 30 is an excellent age. I also believe that this milestone demands an spectacular weekend of exhausting birthday fun.

But first…

Happy Birthday, Love.

Happy Birthday to the man who faithfully walks the dog every evening so I don’t have to go out in my pajamas.

Happy Birthday to the man who shows me exceptional patience and understanding when I’m tired/emotional/stressed/happy/sad/excited/apathetic/content.

Happy Birthday to the man who will lovingly get back out of his warm comfy bed at night because his wife forgot she had a load of laundry sitting in the washing machine.

Happy Birthday to the man who loves to cook delicious meals.

Happy Birthday to the man who works so hard at his job and gives 1,000% over and above so he can be a blessing to his coworkers.

Happy Birthday to the man who showed up at work with a full omelet bar and spent his whole lunchbreak making omelets for his colleagues.

Happy Birthday to the man who sometimes just needs a break from me so he can play XBox.

This crazy girl came over one Saturday afternoon to get ready for a school dance. She waltzed in with a fresh, sassy new haircut (compliments of rising Salon Blu stylist and sister), a borrowed little black dress, and her usual happy chatter.

She wore a dress.

No, really…..Rebekah wore a dress!

As you can see, she looked awesome, just as beautiful on the outside as she is on the inside. I’ve watched her grow up as a little tomboy and blossom into a lovely young woman and I’m so proud of who she is becoming.

Her mom, my sis and I got her all dolled up (teamwork!) and I snapped a few shots of her before she raced out the door to meet some friends. Click on an image to browse through the photos!

Baby Love: Craig + Jennah + Audrey

I’m super-excited to share these photos from my first Baby Love session of 2012! If you have hung around my Bonnie B Facebook page, these faces will look familiar to you not only from this session, but from a couple seasons ago. They are familiar to me because Jennah is my BFF’s sister and Craig and Jennah are uncle and auntie to two of my favorite kids in the whole wide world! Now they are having their own little one, and I can’t wait! Jennah contacted me a few weeks ago about not only doing this session, but also putting together a package for maternity through 1 year pics for little Audrey. Not only do I get to capture these last few weeks before they meet their daughter, but I’m also going to take Audrey’s very first portraits at the hospital and help them document the first year of her life. I’m so honored to be a part of the beginning of their little family.

This is a new location for me, and I am absolutely in love with it! Special thanks to my new friends at SweetPeas Antiques and Garden in Youngsville, NC.

When Jennah stepped out of the car in those fantastic red heels, I nearly had a heart attack. So sassy!

The book she is holding was Jennah’s when she was a little one. I also had the same book! It’s called The Goodnight Book.

These are two of my favorites, good job Craig. =)

Audrey is going to have some sassy shoes like her Mom!

I’m headed to Jennah’s baby shower today, it’s going to be a blast! I worked late into the night with BFF Elissa and Auntie Paige on some AH-mazing baby shower details and it’s going to be the cutest ever. Look for the photos over on my other blog at Calm Down Friends!

A First Look

Yes, you see that the blog got a little upgrade! This is not the final product, but blog design and such is just not something I’m good at. I like to take photos. I like editing those photos. I like sharing those photos. I do NOT enjoy coding and uploading and moving and straightening and becoming a crazy person because I don’t understand what I’m doing. The blog makeover will happen at some point, but until then you can enjoy this WordPress-generated theme called “Forever.”

Speaking of FOREVER, I have a bit of a backlog of lovely images to share with you from 2011. Let’s not go into all the details of when this wedding happened, (ok so it was August) but instead let us enjoy the emotions of a bride and groom seeing each other for the first time on their wedding day. I love love love love love shooting a First Look between the bride and groom. I highly recommend it. Forget that it makes the day go smoother, forget that it cuts down the photo time after the ceremony, and forget that it makes your photographer happy…

It’s just incredibly sweet and moving. Every. Time.

This is my darling sister-in-law Becky (Now Mrs. Wehry) and her husband PJ. I often have to do a little coaching to help along a nervous bride and groom, but I seriously can’t remember saying a word most of this time. This is all them! It was incredibly hot and humid outside, so we kicked everyone out of the sanctuary and PJ and Becky had their First Look with just me and Brian hanging back to capture the moment. PJ is so expressive, and Becky just glows! I laugh when I see her sneaking up behind him and biting her lip with excitement!

Another blog?

Yes my friends, I have another blog!

You may or may not know that I recently went through the trauma of my best friend moving 7 hours away. We are always sharing style tips, new purchases, stuff we got on clearance at Target, photos of our respective adorable children or dog…etc…so we thought “why not make a blog where we can share these things with each other and the world?”

So we did. It’s nothing major, not professional or anything, just a blog where we can share silly, pretty, or adorable things.

It’s called “Calm Down Friends,” and if you want to know what that means you will have to go over there and check it out. Our first post is simply a short history of our friendship, and we even shared some slightly embarrassing vintage Elissa and Bonnie photos. (I did get that top on clearance at Target…and I should have left it on the rack!)

No worries, I won’t abandon my photography blog! This is where I get to share my favorite images of my wonderful clients and tell their stories. Calm Down Friends is a place to share quick little posts that really didn’t fit here. Hopefully soon this blog will get renovated and there will be even more fun here! I have a backlog of images from last season that I was simply too swamped to share, and I’m excited to get going on those posts.
